Jan McClure, Deputy Principal, Ballarat & Clarendon College

Jan McClure is Deputy Principal of Ballarat & Clarendon College, an independent, coeducational school of 1200 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Jan was previously Head of Professional Development at Ballarat & Clarendon College.

Over the last five years, David Shepherd (Principal) and Jan, together with the Leadership team, have developed a new curriculum framework for Years 5–9.

The main elements of this framework include the Essential Learning Outcomes for students together with Developmental Continuums (or Progress Maps) which describe the likely paths for learners in each of the learning areas identified as essential. These learning continuums are critical for both the teacher and the student as they allow for the tracking of the progress of the learner.

Other developments at Ballarat & Clarendon College include the use of purpose-built observation classrooms and a Performance Management process that focuses on practice in the classroom. Input from student surveys is also used to help improve learning outcomes for students.
