Young carers in schools

Report

Many students play a key role in the care of relatives or family members who are unable to look after themselves. While most children or teenagers help in the home, the role of a young carer is distinguished by the amount of time involved and by the absence of supervision and guidance from adults. For young carers school may offer relief and refuge from the strains of their responsibilities, and a place to mix and socialise. At the same time the caring role may hinder their school work and expose them to further social pressures. There are a number of important ways in which schools can support young carers, through policies and procedures, curriculum and relationships with school staff.
