Described in this book is a year-long learning experiment conducted by the author, a Grade 5 teacher in urban Chicago, as he sought to design a curriculum based on students' needs and aspirations. Schultz's class highlighted the state of their school building as a problem, and began to lobby for a new building, engaging in letter-writing, interviews with education officials, and critical report-writing analysing the run-down nature of their school. Outlined are the challenges and successes faced by the class as they worked together to create and implement a democratic curriculum. Adapted from publisher's description.
