Teaching Primary Science Constructively

Keith Skamp
Thomson, May 2004
Based on the constructivist approach to learning, this title addresses the key scientific areas of movement and force, electricity, energy, animals and living things, the environment, materials and chemical change, space, the changing earth and weather. Key concepts, supported by more detailed information, common student misconceptions, teaching strategies, activities and reflections are outlined for each topic. Background on the constructivist approach and working scientifically suggests ways that teachers can help students develop deep conceptual understandings of the world around them, while activities focus on everyday occurrences to support this understanding. The book is written for primary school teachers and those undertaking teacher training, both with and without a scientific background. For further information see publisher's description.

Schools and Area Regeneration

Deane Crowther, Colleen Cummings, Alan Dyson, Alan Milward
Policy Press, October 2003
There is growing interest in the role schools can play in contributing to regeneration of their local area. Schools serving disadvantaged areas are encouraged to be outward looking, to engage with families and communities and to coordinate their efforts with those of other agencies. At the same time, however, schools are required to retain a focus on their core business of teaching and learning in order to increase student success. This report explores the ways in which schools serving two economically and socially disadvantaged areas in the United Kingdom have attempted to balance their educational aims with growing demands to engage in community life. It focuses on the relationship between the schools and their respective communities and on outcomes in terms of individual and community development. (Adapted from publisher's description)

The Inside Story of the Teacher Revolution in America

Don Cameron

Written by a retired Executive Director of the USA National Education Association (NEA), this book gives an insider's view of the revolution in teachers' working conditions in the USA throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The factors leading up to the establishment of unionism in the 1960s are covered, along with the subsequent revolutionising of the teaching profession and implementation of collective bargaining statutes. The described shifts in NEA philosophy, programs and structure are linked to internal organisation changes. The author considers teachers' strengths in facing a variety of obstacles, and aims to provide a historical view of the value to society of public education and teachers in the USA. For further information see publisher's description.
