Project proposal summary
As an existing Schools for Innovation and Excellence Cluster, we have a keen interest in promoting ‘Relational Learning’.
‘Relational Learning’ is a model which recognises that effective, healthy learning occurs in relationship to community rather than in isolation.
This model recognises five student learning relationships:
- student to self;
- student to the subject matter;
- student to their peers;
- student to teachers; and
- student to the wider community.
These relationships have a huge bearing on the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of students as well as their academic performance. We believe that it is incumbent upon us as educators to recognise the significance of relationships in the learning process and strive to actively develop these relationships.
However, to address relationships, we first need to ‘lay the foundation stones’ of relationships – values. These will be the basis for all relationships throughout students’ lives enabling them to be effective community members.
We propose to facilitate a cultural change which encourages students to see values as ‘roadmaps for life’ and teach how values translate into behaviours.
